Denny Chapman wins SASS Men's All-Around World Championship

Denny Chapman won the Men's All-Around World Championship at the 2011 SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) "End of Trail". The event, held at Founder's Ranch in Edgewood NM June 22-26, combined mounted and cowboy action shooting stages to crown the most versatile cowboy shooter in the country. "I had a great time competing in the All-Around," Chapman said, "I flew in last-minute and ended up doing pretty good." Chapman thanked his sponsors and the Double E Ranch, who loaned him a mounted shooting horse for the event. "The mare I rode in the mounted portion of the event was everything I had hoped for, "Denny said, "She was fast and powerful with a good handle." Chapman ended up winning a Reserve World Championship in the seperate mounted match, making for two titles from the prestigious event. "I love mounted shooting and have a growing appreciation for cowboy action shooting as well," Chapman said, "I'm already looking forward to next year!"

Denny Chapman earns dual titles at SASS Florida State Mounted Shooting Championships

Denny Chapman won the titles of Mounted Rifle Shooting Champion and Extreme Mounted Shooting Champion at the Florida SASS Mounted Shooting State Championships held at Canterbury Showplace Arena, November 20-21, in Newberry FL. Mounted Rifle competition is a timed-event consisting of shooting five targets with a single action revolver, then shooting five targets with a rifle from horseback on the run - often turning the horse loose and steering with seat and legs only for the rifle portion of the course. Extreme Mounted Shooting involves shooting ten targets with two single action revolvers while jumping a course and negotiating unusual obstacles. Denny is a mounted shooting horse trainer and clinician, and mentioned that at least 14 of the 63 competitors at the event had either trained with him, sent horses to him for training or attended one of his mounted shooting clinics. "I was very proud of my students and the horses I've worked with at the State Championships this weekend," Chapman said, "It was the first sanctioned match for a few of them and they all made me very proud." Chapman promoted his sponsors at the awards ceremony Sunday, giving away products from several of his sponsors, including Pennfield Feeds, Larsen Farms Hay, Mane N Tail and Suncoast Bedding. I've had countless requests of level 1/beginner mounted shooters to repost some videos of our mounted shooting horse training process. Here are five videos of me working with five different horses - from the first introduction to noise with bullwhips and our custom 1/4 - load training blanks, to galloping a shooting course with full-power competition loads. It is very important to keep your horse slow the first year, seasoning him right and letting him build confidence to go faster later without spooking or getting too "hot" as you gain the ability to shoot and run faster in higher levels. Shoot out to the sides, at the "3 o'clock" and "9 o'clock" positions or slightly behind the horse in the beginning. As a level 1 competitor, it's rarely necessary to go faster than an easy lope to be successful - and you're building an important foundation of confidence in your new mounted shooting horse that will pay off for years to come...

Here are some photos from our performance in Pavo GA last weekend. This wonderful event raised funds for the therapeutic riding program, Hands and Hearts for Horses. Our apprentice performer/trainer, Stephanie Cons, and I performed a tandem ride and drive, roman riding, fire jumping as well as trick horse and mounted shooting clinics. Next weekend, we'll be representing our sponsors while competing in the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association event in Marianna FL. Wayne Williams will be interviewing us for his show, Speaking of Horses, the following week - then we'll be announcing the FJRA Rodeo Finals in Ocala. Busy, Busy, Busy!

Howdy all! Just got back from some business in L.A. and shot the SASS Eastern National Mounted Shooting Championships last Saturday and Sunday (after flying all day and getting to bed at 3am Sat morning) - finished 3rd overall! Two of my students did exceptionally well - Jerry Jacobs won his class of SR M3 and Rifle, and Geoff Goldstein won M5 and overall! Congratulations, cowboys!
I'll be emcee'ing the MTRA (Marion Therapeutic Riding Association) "Symphony of Horses" in Ocala this weekend, then performing at the Central Florida Fair in Orlando March 4-6 as well as hosting the "Taylor's Runnin' Iron Shootout"; a 2-stage mounted shooting event with 20 of the best mounted shooters in Florida competing for guns donated by Taylor's & Co Firearms (http://www.taylorsfirearms.com)! CMSA Atlantic Coast Classic

Denny finshed four days of announcing and color commentary at the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Atlantic Coast Classic in Jacksonville, FL, last weekend. In addition, he competed in and won the open class Mounted Rifle Shooting jackpot by winning the preliminaries on Thursday. We just returned from Las Vegas where we represented our Firearms sponsor, Taylor's & Company, at the SHOT Show - the international shooting, hunting and outdoors trade show. We also hosted some video interviews for Western Shooting Horse TV while we were there. Denny Chapman and Deke Rivers spent a week in Amarillo TX at the 2009 CMSA World Championships. Denny was on the announcing/color commentary staff and Deke provided entertainment courtesy of Taylor's & Co Firearms. This is Stephanie Cons, our assistant trainer/performer, on the new Arabian Roman Riding team. "Klassy" and "Kav" were given to us by our friend, Jim Hall, a mounted shooter and retired chariot racer in Michigan. The boys had been a racing chariot team and Michigan State University's mascots for several years. They are settling in well and Stephanie is putting them through the paces as a roman team, with the instruction of Mary Rivers and I. At this rate, they will soon be ready for public performances! We are really excited about this pistol, which is the lightest, most efficient mounted shooting gun available today. The .45 LC pistol is offered in Stainless or Blued, two choices of grips, and barrel sizes of 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches. Denny won the title of Overall Champion Cowboy at a SASS Mounted Shooting competition July 25 in Ocala FL. The match, featuring 40 competitors from the Central Florida area, was held at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion. 5/07 - Denny has been chosen to be on the official announcing staff of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association for the 2007 Eastern United States Championships in Murphysboro TN, the Western United States Championships in Guthrie OK and the World Championships in Las Vegas.
4/07 - Denny was feature equine entertainer at the Central Florida Fair in Orlando. Fair staff were quoted as saying Denny's specialty acts and clinics were the biggest draw of the Fair, including celebrity book signings and appearances by Henry Winkler and Gary Coleman! Denny Chapman was the host emcee of the Midwest Classic CMSA Championships last weekend in Cloverdale IN. The event, featuring some 100 mounted shooting competitors, took place in the Crossroads Arena about 40 miles east of Indianapolis. One of his students, Jerry Jacobs, won his class using his Taylor's Smokewagon Deluxe's. Taylor's & Co Firearms is Denny's mounted shooting gun sponsor. "I sure was proud of Jerry last weekend," Denny said, "He did us proud with his Taylor's and shot like a pro." Jerry spent a significant amount of time training with Denny last Fall and Winter - looks like it paid off with Jerry walking away from the championships with a nice paycheck and Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle!

We had a busy day yesterday beginning with a promotional appearance at Seminole Feed in Ocala with "Dusty", one of my trick horses and roman riding team members. Seminole's customer appreciation day drew huge crowds who came to visit with us for a couple of hours INSIDE the store! Chester Weber from Live Oak was there with us along with his horse "Jamaica". We signed Suncoast Bedding promo pictures, then picked up my Mounted Shooting horse (and other half of my roman team) "Spanky" for a mounted shooting and roman riding exhibtion at the Florida Horse Park during their extreme cowboy challenge race. The video in this entry shows our first attempt at mounted shooting while roman riding at our home arena earlier last week - one of my many "don't try this at home" stunts... We often incorporate some kind of mounted trick shooting into our specialty acts. We're one of the few (if not the only) entertainers in the country that can feature live cowboy singing, tandem riding and driving, roman riding, trick horses, trick roping, whip artistry, mounted shooting and fire stunts all in one act with two horses...makes for a busy day at the "office"...but who likes to be boring?

He also won the Open Pro-Class and was Reserve Overall Cowboy at the end of the match on Sunday. One of his students, Chelsea Kornbleau, won her second class win and moved up to a the L-2 division!
